Jason,

What are people so afraid of?

Any Christian in their right mind should have no legitimate objection against having a large church i.e. a “mega-church.” There is nothing wrong with having large churches. I say the more the merrier.
I understand however that the complaint is usually directed against the means by which someone achieved mega-church status. The criticism is that in many-mega churches the sermons are not characterized by the kind of sermon Peter preached in Acts 2 when he said things like, “This man [Jesus] was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross” (2:23) and "Repent and be baptized…Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
Rather the sermons sound more like exhortations from Stuart Smalley. Where is “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for life” in Acts 2? Better yet where in all of Acts can you find any preaching that says that? Not trying to stir up a debate here. I am just clarifying one of the common complaints against mega-churches.
